Sequence 2 — Me, My Personality and Life Experiences Listen and consider

Listen and consider : Make a profile

🔊 المعلّمة تقرأ لك
Your class is putting a page on the school noticeboard: one photograph and eight lines for each pupil. Eight lines — not eighty. Someone who has never met you will read them and then look for you in the yard. “He is nice” uses up one of your eight lines and tells that reader nothing at all. So what do you actually have to say about a person, and in what order, for that person to become recognisable?

1. Read this poster, which is on the noticeboard of the school you are about to hear: “Sign up for the contest today. Don't miss your chance to become a star! TALENT SHOW — What are your talents? Can you sing? Can you dance? Can you do magic tricks?” 2. Before you listen, answer for yourself: what can you do, and what can't you do? 3. Read these three questions and keep them in your head while you listen. They are the questions of the recording: What is he like? · What does he like? · Where does he live? ⭐ On this page the recording is read aloud by the listening button, at the top. Listen once without opening anything.

نصّ المسموع. ⛔ لا تفتحه قبل أن تستمع وتجيب.

At the noticeboard — Lila is filling in the talent show forms when Riad stops in front of the poster Lila: Are you signing up, Riad? Can you help me? I need all the forms before Thursday. Riad: I'd like to sign up. But I can't sing, and I can't dance. Lila: Nobody has to sing. What can you do? Riad: I can do magic tricks. Not many — three. Lila: Three is enough. Now let me fill in your profile: this sheet goes under your photograph on the board. First question — what are you like? Riad: What am I like? I don't know. Ask somebody else. Lila: Then I'll write what I see. You are quiet, you are patient, and you never arrive late. Riad: Patient — yes, I am. You need to be patient to learn one trick. Lila: Second question — what do you like? Riad: Football and swimming. And windsurfing, but only in summer. Lila: Good. “What are you like” and “what do you like” are two different questions, and you have just answered both of them. Third — where do you live? Riad: Behind the market. Five minutes from school. Lila: And now the last line, the one everybody reads. Tell me something people do not know about you. Riad: I used to be afraid of standing in front of the class. Really afraid. Lila: You? Riad: Me. Two years ago I used to go out of the room when the teacher asked me to read aloud. Lila: And on Thursday you are going to do magic tricks in front of the whole school. Riad: When school finishes, I will show my three tricks. And then I will learn a fourth one.

First listening

الاستماع الأوّل : أسئلة عامّة.
1. Who are the two speakers, where are they, and why?
من المتحدّثان ؟ وأين هما ؟ ولماذا ؟

Lila and Riad, two pupils, at the school noticeboard. Lila is collecting the forms for the talent show, and she fills in Riad's profile — the sheet that will go under his photograph.

2. What can Riad do, and what can't he do?
ماذا يستطيع رياض ؟ وماذا لا يستطيع ؟

He can do magic tricks — three of them. He can't sing and he can't dance. ⟹ Notice that Riad answers with what he cannot do first. Most people do. A profile that only lists talents is not believed; one line of “I can't…” makes all the others true.

3. What did Riad use to do two years ago?
ماذا كان رياض يفعل قبل سنتين ؟

He used to be afraid of standing in front of the class, and he used to go out of the room when the teacher asked him to read aloud. ⟹ And that is the line Lila calls “the one everybody reads”. A profile with a past in it stops being a list of qualities and becomes a person.

4. Find the four kinds of answer Lila writes down. What question does each one answer?
استخرج أنواع الأجوبة الأربعة التي دوّنتها ليلى، وحدّد السؤال الذي يجيب عنه كلّ منها.
  1. quiet · patient · never late ⟹ “What is he like?” — his character.
  2. football · swimming · windsurfing ⟹ “What does he like?” — his tastes.
  3. behind the market, five minutes from school ⟹ “Where does he live?” — the place.
  4. used to be afraid … will show his three tricks ⟹ “Where does he come from, and where is he going?” — his story.

Four questions, and Lila asked them in that order without hesitating once. That order is not hers — it is the order of every profile you will ever read.

Second listening — the four questions of a profile

الاستماع الثاني : أسئلة البطاقة الأربعة، والبنية التي يجيب بها كلّ سؤال.
Which structure answers which question?
أيّ بنية تجيب عن أيّ سؤال ؟
The questionThe structure that answers itFrom the recording
What is he like? — characterto be + adjective of character“You are quiet, you are patient.”
What does he look like? — appearanceto look like · to have + a physical detailnot asked here: Lila has his photograph in front of her
What does he like? — tastesto like + noun · can + base verb for a talent“Football and swimming.” · “I can do magic tricks.”
Where does he live? — the placeto live + preposition of place“Behind the market, five minutes from school.”
Where does he come from, where is he going? — the storyused to + base verb for the past · will + base verb for the future“I used to be afraid…” · “I will show my three tricks.”

⭐ Read the middle column downwards. A profile is not a vocabulary exercise: it is five structures, one per question. Learn the structures and you can write a profile of anybody, in any language you have.

To make a profile of someone, answer four questions — and never mix the first two. ① What is he like? — his character: quiet, patient, friendly, generous. Answered with to be + adjective. ② What does he like? — his tastes and talents: football, swimming, magic tricks. Answered with to like + noun, and with can + base verb. ③ Where does he live? — the place, with a preposition: behind the market, near the school, in Cherchell. ④ What did he use to be, and what will he do? — the story: used to + base verb for the past, will + base verb for what comes next. ⛔ What are you like? asks about your character. What do you like? asks about your tastes. One word of difference, two different answers.
🔊 The ear trap of this lesson: “can” is not always pronounced the same way. The weak form — when can stands in front of a verb, it almost disappears: the vowel becomes the short, colourless sound written /kən/. You hear it in “What can you do?” and “I can do magic tricks.” The strong forms — when can ends the sentence, or when it is negative, it is said in full: /kæn/ in “Yes, I can.”, and /kænt/ or /kɑːnt/ in “No, I can't.” ⛔ This is where listening goes wrong. “I can swim” and “I can't swim” are opposites, and in speech the whole difference is one short sound at the end. ⟹ When you listen, do not listen for can — listen for the t.
⛔ فخّ الأذن : ⁦can⁩ لا تُنطق نطقا واحدا. قبل الفعل تُنطق ضعيفة وتكاد تختفي، وفي آخر الجملة وفي النفي تُنطق قويّة واضحة. من لم يسمع الفرق سمع ⁦can⁩ مكان ⁦can't⁩.

Now it is your turn

إنتاج : املأ البطاقة، ثمّ اكتب، ثمّ افتح النموذج وقارن.
Write the profile of someone in your class

a. Choose one person, and ask that person the four questions. Do not guess the answers — a profile written without asking is a portrait of yourself. b. Fill in the sheet: Name … · What is he or she like? … · What does he or she like? … · What can he or she do? … · Where does he or she live? … · What did he or she use to do? … · What will he or she do when school finishes? … c. Now write eight lines, in that order. Give two adjectives of character at most, and one thing the person cannot do. ⛔ Do not write a single thing that the person has not told you.

A model — the same method applied to the recording
نموذج : المنهجيّة نفسها مطبّقة على المسموع.

Write yours first. This model uses only what Riad said about himself — nothing has been added.

Model

Riad is a quiet, patient boy, and he is never late. He lives behind the market, five minutes from school. He likes football and swimming, and he goes windsurfing in summer. He can do magic tricks — three of them. He cannot sing, and he says so himself. Two years ago he used to be afraid of standing in front of the class: when the teacher asked him to read aloud, he used to go out of the room. On Thursday he will show his three tricks in front of the whole school. And then he will learn a fourth one.

Count what makes this profile work: two adjectives of character, one thing he cannot do, and one past that contradicts the present. That last one is the sentence a reader remembers — and it costs one line.

At the BEM, the profile is one of the most frequent subjects of Written expression: “write a short paragraph about your best friend / a member of your family / a person you admire”. It also appears in Comprehension, where you are asked to fill in an identity card from a text. Keep three things ready: What are you like? = character, What do you like? = tastes ; can + base verb for what the person is able to do ; and used to + base verb for what they were before. ⛔ The mistake that costs marks every year: answering “What is he like?” with “He likes football”.
A profile is four questions, always the same four: what is the person like, what does the person like, where does the person live, and what did the person use to be. Each one has its own structure — to be for the character, to like and can for the tastes and the talents, used to and will for the story. Answer them in that order, keep one line for something the person cannot do, and eight lines will be enough.
