Unit 4 — WE ARE A FAMILY Words and sounds

Words and sounds: the cluster ‘ngth’ and weak forms in phrasal adjectives

🔊 المعلّمة تقرأ لك
« They strengthen our character… they lengthen our lives with their humour. » Two verbs with the same four letters in the middle: ngth. And in « proud of the history of our homeland », the little word of almost disappears. You already know these sounds; this lesson makes sure you can say them. So how do you pronounce ngth — and when does of lose its vowel?
🎓في نهاية هذا الدرس ستكون قادرا على:
  • نطق المجموعة ⁦ngth⁩ نطقا صحيحا ⁦/ŋθ/⁩ في ⁦strengthen, lengthen⁩ وما يشبهها
  • نطق حرف الجرّ ⁦of⁩ بصيغته الضعيفة ⁦/əv/⁩ في الصفات المتبوعة بحرف جرّ ⁦(proud of, full of, made of)⁩

1. The cluster ngth

المجموعة ⁦ngth⁩ أربعة أحرف لكنّها صوتان فقط: ⁦/ŋ/⁩ ثمّ ⁦/θ/⁩. لا يُنطق الحرف ⁦g⁩ صوتا مستقلّا. اقرأ الحوار بصوت مرتفع قبل أن تفتح الجواب.

In strengthen and lengthen, four letters — n, g, t, h — make a cluster of only two sounds: /ŋ/, the sound of ng in sing, followed by /θ/, the sound of th in three. The g is not said as a separate /g/, and the t is not said as a /t/: the spelling has four letters, the pronunciation two sounds.

ngth — four letters, two sounds
WordPronunciation
strengthenˈstreŋθn
lengthenˈleŋθn
ng = ŋ as in sing · th = θ as in three · IPA symbols are given bare; read them between slashes: əv = /əv/.
TV heroes — a dialogue

Henry: Tell me Sofiane, what are your favourite TV heroes and heroines? Sofiane: Well, my favourite TV heroes and heroines are definitely those who are honourable, honest, and have a sense of humour. Henry: Why do you prefer these? Sofiane: How shall I put it? This sort of heroes and heroines strengthen our character through the humanity and honesty they show. And furthermore, they lengthen our lives with their humour. Henry: What about yours, Lamia? Lamia: To tell you the truth, the best TV heroes and heroines are those who make us proud of the history of our homeland, and those who reveal to us the kind of feelings the human heart is made of.

Task 1 — How is ngth pronounced in strengthen and lengthen? What difference do you notice between its spelling and its pronunciation? Add three words with the same cluster.
كيف تُنطق المجموعة ⁦ngth⁩؟ وما الفرق بين كتابتها ونطقها؟ أضف ثلاث كلمات فيها المجموعة نفسها.

It is pronounced /ŋθ/: four letters in the spelling, two sounds in the pronunciation — no /g/, no /t/. Three words with the same cluster: strength /streŋθ/, length /leŋθ/, lengthy /ˈleŋθi/. In fact, strengthen and lengthen are made from the nouns strength and length with the suffix -en — the cluster does not change when the verb is formed.

2. The weak form of of

حرف الجرّ ⁦of⁩ لا يُنبر عادة، فيُنطق بصيغته الضعيفة ⁦/əv/⁩: ⁦proud of, made of⁩. ويستعيد صيغته القوية ⁦/ɒv/⁩ حين يأتي في آخر الجملة.

Like the auxiliaries, the preposition of is almost never stressed: its vowel is reduced, and it is said /əv/ — its weak form. It is weak after the adjectives it follows, in phrasal adjectives such as proud of, full of, made of, and after nouns: a sense of humour, the history of our homeland. Of takes its strong form, /ɒv/, when it ends the sentence, with nothing after it — the same rule as for the auxiliaries.

of — the two forms
WordWeak formStrong form
ofəvɒv
Weak inside a phrase, strong at the end of a sentence. · IPA symbols are given bare; read them between slashes: əv = /əv/.
Task 2 — How is of pronounced in each of the pairs in bold in the dialogue?
كيف يُنطق ⁦of⁩ في كلّ زوج من الكلمات المكتوبة بالخطّ الغليظ؟
  • « a sense of humour » → weak /əv/.
  • « This sort of heroes » → weak /əv/.
  • « proud of the history » → weak /əv/.
  • « the history of our homeland » → weak /əv/.
  • « the kind of feelings » → weak /əv/.
  • « the human heart is made of. » → strong /ɒv/: of ends the sentence.

Five weak forms and one strong. The word is the same; in the last pair nothing comes after of, so it keeps its full vowel.

Do this alone, out loud. ① Read the dialogue, taking the three parts in turn — then try it with the text hidden. ② Record yourself on your phone, then listen back once. Ask yourself two questions: were strengthen and lengthen said without a /g/? Was of short and quick, /əv/, in the first five pairs — and full, /ɒv/, in « made of » at the end? ③ Read it a second time, and stop when both answers are yes.
أنجزها وحدك بصوت مرتفع: اقرأ الحوار بأدواره الثلاثة، ثمّ سجّل صوتك واستمع إليه مرّة واحدة.
Pronunciation is examined in writing, not aloud: the paper asks you to classify words by a sound or to pick the odd one out. Have three things ready: ① ngth is two sounds, /ŋ/ + /θ/ — strength, length, strengthen, lengthen, with no /g/; ② of is weak, /əv/, inside a phrase — proud of, full of, made of, a sense of humour; ③ it is strong, /ɒv/, at the end of a sentence — « the kind of feelings the human heart is made of ». ⚠️ The frequent mistake: pronouncing every letter of the spelling — a /g/ in strength, a full /ɒv/ in proud of. Say the word before you classify it.
What I keep — The cluster ngth is four letters but two sounds, /ŋ/ + /θ/: strengthen /ˈstreŋθn/, lengthen /ˈleŋθn/, strength, length — the g is not said on its own. The preposition of is usually weak, /əv/: proud of, full of, made of, a sense of humour, the history of our homeland. It is strong, /ɒv/, only when it ends the sentence: the feelings the human heart is made of. As always, the sound — not the spelling — is the rule.
