Words and sounds: the cluster ‘ngth’ and the weak form of “of”

Say this out loud: « the kind of feelings the human heart is made of ». The little word of comes twice — squeezed in « kind of », and full at the very end of the sentence. Now look at strengthen: n, g, t, h, four letters in a row — but how many sounds? English spelling hides the sounds, and you have to hear them. How do you say ngth — and when does of shrink?

1. The cluster ngth

في ⁦ngth⁩ أربعة أحرف تُكتب، وصوتان يُسمعان : ⁦/ŋ/⁩ و ⁦/θ/⁩. اقرأ الحوار بصوت مرتفع قبل أن تفتح الجواب.

In strengthen and lengthen, four letters — n, g, t, h — make only two sounds: /ŋ/, the sound of ng in sing, and /θ/, the sound of th in three. The g is not heard on its own, and th is never a /t/ followed by an /h/. Many speakers also slip a light /k/ between the two: /ŋkθ/. The cluster comes from the adjectives: strong → strength → strengthen · long → length → lengthen.

Listen to this dialogue about TV heroes

Henry: Tell me Sofiane, what are your favourite TV heroes and heroines? Sofiane: Well, my favourite TV heroes and heroines are definitely those who are honourable, honest, and have a sense of humour. Henry: Why do you prefer these? Sofiane: How shall I put it? This sort of heroes and heroines strengthen our character through the humanity and honesty they show. And furthermore, they lengthen our lives with their humour. Henry: What about yours, Lamia? Lamia: To tell you the truth, the best TV heroes and heroines are those who make us proud of the history of our homeland, and those who reveal to us the kind of feelings the human heart is made of.

Task 1 — How is the cluster ngth pronounced in strengthen and lengthen? Is there a difference between its spelling and its pronunciation? Add three words with the same cluster.

It is pronounced /ŋθ/ — or /ŋkθ/: /ˈstreŋθən/, /ˈleŋθən/. Yes, there is a difference: the spelling shows four letters, the ear hears two sounds. There is no /g/ and no /t/: ng is one sound, /ŋ/, and th is one sound, /θ/. Three more words: strength, length, wavelength.

2. The weak form of of

⁦of⁩ كلمة وظيفيّة : تُنطق ضعيفة ⁦/əv/⁩ قبل اسمها، وقويّة ⁦/ɒv/⁩ حين تنتهي بها الجملة.

Of is a function word. Usually unstressed, it takes its weak form /əv/ — the sound of the first a in « again »: « a sense /əv/ humour ». But when nothing follows it — at the end of the sentence — it takes its strong form /ɒv/, the vowel of « not »: « the kind of feelings the human heart is made /ɒv/. » As always with weak and strong forms, it is not the word that decides: it is its position and its stress.

Task 2 — How is of pronounced in each pair in bold in the dialogue?

« the human heart is made of. » → strong /ɒv/: the sentence ends on it.

Six times the same word: five times weak, once strong. What changed is the position — nothing follows the last of.

Do this alone, out loud. ① Press the listening button ▶ at the top of the page and listen to the dialogue once, eyes on the text. ② Read Henry's lines, then Sofiane's, then Lamia's, out loud. ③ Record yourself reading the whole dialogue, then listen back once. Ask yourself two questions only: did of sound like a short /əv/ everywhere except at the very end — and did strengthen and lengthen sound /ŋθ/, with no /g/? ④ Read it a second time, and stop when both answers are yes.

3. The letter h — sounded or silent

الحرف ⁦h⁩ يُنطق في أوّل أغلب الكلمات، ويصمت في كلمات قليلة ⁦(hour · honest)⁩، وقد يسقط في الكلمات الوظيفيّة غير المنبورة.

At the beginning of most words, h is sounded /h/: heroes, humour, history, heart /hɑːt/. In a few words it is silent, whatever their stress: hour /ˈaʊə/, honest, honesty, honourable. And in unaccented function words, the h is often dropped in rapid speech: his is /hɪz/ when it is stressed, /ɪz/ when it is not.

Task 3 — Pick out the words starting with h in the dialogue, and classify them: h sounded, or h silent.

The silent h words are few: learn them as a list — hour, honest, honesty, honour, honourable.

Pronunciation is examined in writing, not aloud: the paper asks you to classify words according to the pronunciation of a letter or a cluster, or to pick the odd one out. Have three things ready: ① ngth = /ŋθ/ — strength, length, strengthen, lengthen; ② of is weak, /əv/, before its noun, and strong, /ɒv/, at the end of the sentence; ③ the silent h words — hour, honest, honour. ⚠️ The frequent mistake: sounding the h of honest — ✗ /ˈhɒnɪst/ → ✓ /ˈɒnɪst/. Say the word before you classify it.

What I keep — The cluster ngth is written with four letters but said with two sounds, /ŋθ/ (often /ŋkθ/): strength, length, strengthen, lengthen. Of is weak, /əv/, before its noun (a sense of humour) and strong, /ɒv/, when it ends the sentence (… is made of). And h is sounded at the beginning of most words, but silent in hour, honest and honour. Once again, the spelling is a poor guide: the sound is the rule.
